Software

Software for printing checks and processing what comes back

Software for the two halves of the same operation. The CheckStream family prints checks on blank stock, in-house, at the teller line or as a service. OnSight and OnSight Decision turn returned items into compliant Image Replacement Documents and decide what happens to each one.

All of it is built around the same constraint the printers are: a MICR line has to land inside a bank reader/sorter's tolerances, every time. That is why the returns products ship with their own printer.

CheckStream: what gets composed, in one pass

  • Accounting dataPayee, amount, account
  • Check templateBackground, logo, security
  • MICR fontE-13B or CMC-7, with the MICR line printed in the same pass

Printed onto blank safety stock. Nothing is pre-printed. Background, logo, security features and MICR line all print at production time.

The outbound side: CheckStream composes the whole check rather than filling in a pre-printed form.

What an IRD carries

  • Images of the original itemFront and back
  • Its own MICR lineSpecific to this item
  • ASC X9.100-140The governing specification
  • Legally equivalentSubstitutes for the original
  • Blank IRD stock24 lb ProMark, two-perf

Printed on demand, because the MICR line is specific to the item.

The inbound side: an IRD carries its own MICR line, so it is printed on demand.
Two halves of one operation

The outbound side and the inbound side

Most organizations start on one side and discover the other later. They are worth understanding together, because the same MICR quality problem shows up in both and the same guarantee covers both.

Outbound: printing checks

You are producing payments. The risks are a rejected item costing a bank fee, pre-printed stock going obsolete when an account changes, and an unauthorized person printing a check.

  • CheckStream to print in-house, CheckStream Teller at the teller line, or CheckStream Dispatch to have checks printed and mailed
  • Blank safety stock instead of pre-printed forms
  • Security printed into the document, not onto it
  • A Positive Pay file for the bank, with CheckStream and CheckStream Dispatch

Inbound: processing returns

You are receiving items that came back. The risks are an item held too long to re-present, a chargeback packet assembled wrong, and an IRD a reader/sorter will not accept.

  • OnSight, for transforming and printing IRDs
  • OnSight Decision, for automating the per-item call
  • Compliance with ASC X9.100-140
  • Audit logs and a detail report for each file

Software, printer, and toner from one relationship

The MICR Performance Guarantee is possible because we supply all three parts of the print path. When MICR quality is in question, there is no argument between three suppliers about whose part caused it.
