The Last Mile

Since the enactment of Check 21 in 2004, overall adoption has soared, but returns continue to be in-cleared as paper at thousands of institutions, particularly community banks and credit unions. In this paper, we look at how changes at the Federal Reserve Bank are forcing these institutions – and the item processors and software vendors that serve them – to rethink their returns processing strategy. We evaluate the options available and assess their respective strengths and weaknesses. We also offer recommendations on what institutions should look for in an electronic returns processing solution.

The Great Check 21 Land Grab

The continuing evolution of payments in general and Check 21 in particular are very dynamic. In this paper, we look at the continuing evolution of the processes and technology that came about due to the implementation of Check 21 in October, 2004. We evaluate the current Check 21 landscape as well as examining the future of the industry based on the actions of the major players in the industry.

MICR Laser Printing & High-Speed Reader/Sorter Performance

The continued increase in the number of checks printed on laser MICR printers has raised a concern about the MICR print quality produced by these devices and the resulting performance on the various high-speed reader/sorters, such as the IBM 3890. This paper shows that with proper toner selection and fuser temperature settings, reader/sorter performance problems are minimized. In addition, toner adhesion enhancement agents in the paper will improve fusing latitude but not dramatically.

MICR Performance and the Relationship to MICR Toner Adhesion

The higher performance levels required for MICR laser printing means that images cannot simply look good. Image magnetic characteristics have to be read by commercial high-speed readers, even after abrasion causes the MICR documents to deteriorate. Toner adhesion is very significant. This paper reports on measuring toner adhesion via a 'tape transfer test.' The metric produced relates these test results to actual performance characteristics, so that it can be used for relating process control variables to toner adhesion.

Secure Printing in a Digital Age: Insights & Recommendations for Implementing a Secure Check Disbursement Strategy

Check fraud is a global problem. In the United States alone, billions of dollars in annual losses can be mostly attributed to advances in technology. The advent of MICR laser printers has provided a new ability to control the process of producing checks in a more secure manner. This control, when properly implemented, can actually mitigate an organization's risk. This paper focuses on ways that organizations can realize the benefits of, as well as, understand the processes necessary for multilevel security strategies.
