Fiserv Item Processing Prints More Than 27 Million IRDs per Month with Rosetta Technologies IRDPrint Software and MICR Printers
About the Customer
Fiserv Item Processing, Inc is a business unit of Fiserv, Inc., a multi-billion dollar global corporation located in Brookfield, WI, and the world’s largest service provider to banks, credit unions, lending institutions, and investment advisors. Fiserv Item Processing is an industry leader in third-party item processing, serving more than 1,700 clients and processing more than 2.7 billion checks each year.
The Situation
When the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (Check 21) was signed into law on October 28, 2003, Fiserv IP saw an excellent opportunity to expand their service offerings and fill a niche for their customers. However, since Check 21 was such a new concept, Fiserv IP did not have the technology necessary to provide Image Replacement Document (IRD) printing to its customers in a distributive environment.
At the time there were many unknowns about how Check 21 would impact the financial industry, expected adoption rates, and technical requirements. Fiserv IP needed a partner that would work with them to not only define the solution, but one that could quickly adapt to changes in the marketplace as more and more financial institutions began to print IRDs or replacement checks, and that could adjust to customized requirements from their large bank customers.
Fiserv IP evaluated a number of software solutions to drive their IRD printing. A key consideration was the distributed nature of their IRD printing and the ability to scale the print capabilities to meet volume increases and shifts by print location. In order to meet the market’s needs, Fiserv IP would need to print IRDs for scores of customers in dozens of locations. This would require a system that provided very robust print management tools, plus extensive security and centralized visibility over the print network.
Other technical challenges that could have adversely impacted the project were the printer throughput speed and the robustness of the printer performance. The printer throughput speed is a serious consideration for production environments with tight print windows and deadlines. And, the printer performance is crucial because of the graphics-intensive nature of IRDs. Even today, many competitive print systems cannot maximize printer throughput, and performance, requiring companies to spend more on printers than they should.
Finally, the system needed to meet all applicable standards — both current and future — and produce IRDs of the highest quality.
Rosetta Technologies’ Solution
Rosetta Technologies was a pioneer of IRD printing solutions and was chosen as Fiserv IP’s IRD solution provider late in 2003. Rosetta is a standing member of the ASC X9 committee, which made direct, in-depth knowledge of the emerging standards possible, and allowed for development to begin in advance of the Check 21 start date. Fiserv IP and Rosetta worked hand-in-hand for nearly a year developing a solution that would meet all of their requirements.
In October 2004, Fiserv IP went into production with Rosetta Technologies’ IRDPrint Director software platform. The system provides a complete and extensible printing solution that outputs substitute checks that meet ANS X9.100-140-2004 standards in any of the required formats. IRDPrint Director provides for conversion of ANS X9.90/100 and other input file formats to print-ready IRDs. It supports job sorting and re-composition, queue management, load balancing, audit and security functions, and printer failover protection. In addition, Rosetta greatly expanded the capabilities of IRDPrint Director to enable Fiserv IP to meet the differing requirements of their customers, including printing IRDs for statement insertion, adding post processing optical marks, adding a view and reprint feature and a powerful system manager.
After extensive analysis of MICR printers available in the market, Fiserv IP selected Rosetta Technologies DDP 92 MICR cut-sheet production printers to meet their IRD print requirements. In addition, they selected Rosetta Technologies MICR workgroup printers for lower-volume sites.
Rosetta’s threaded processing allows the MICR IRD printers to run at their rated speeds. This allows Fiserv IP to optimize the company's print architecture for maximum throughput and efficiency, and get the most out of their hardware investment. Also, due to the closely coupled relationship between Rosetta’s hardware and software, users have much greater control over IRD printing and increased protection against duplication and errors.
The Outcome
The combination of Rosetta Technologies’ flexible IRDPrint software, robust production printers, responsive and comprehensive service and supplies management has enabled Fiserv IP to become an industry leader in providing IRD print services for more than 370 clients. Today, Fiserv IP prints more than 27 million IRDs per month in 28 locations across the United States. In addition to printing forward presentment IRDs, they have expanded their offerings to include qualified returns, deposit printing from remote capture systems, IRDs for statement insertion, and other custom applications. Fiserv Item Processing and Rosetta continue to collaborate to refine the IRDPrint Director software as demand and requirements change.
